Who We Are
Who we are?
The Research Center at Hargeisa Group Hospital (HGH) is the first research hospital center in Somaliland. Established under the leadership of Hospital Director Abdirahman Mohamed Osman and a team of research experts, the center aims to transform healthcare delivery through innovative research, quality improvement, and evidence-based practices. It serves as a hub for advancing healthcare knowledge, improving patient outcomes, and strengthening the healthcare system in Somaliland.
Who we are
About us
Hargeisa Group Hospital is the main national referral hospital located in the capital city of Hargeisa, home to over one million people. HGH was built in 1953 by the British administration. It has served not only the residents of Hargeisa but also a larger number of people from the districts and other regions who rely on the quality and affordable services it provides to citizens. The hospital consists of six main wards, almost thirty departments/units and almost 700 staff in a variety of professions and categories, including specialists, administrative support staff and ancillary staff.
Vision
The research center inspires to be the first and leading hospital based medical research and training center in Somaliland by 2028.
Mission
The Hargeisa Group Hospital Research Centre is dedicated to excellence in health research that informs clinical practice, policy, education utilize scientific evidence through translational research and capacity building in medical research and training. The Centre’s mission is to become a prominent research centre that conducts high quality research, research training and thus influencing clinical practice and enhancing health outcomes in the public as well as private institutions in Somaliland.

The Center has made a substantial impact on research training and capacity building within the hospital. Such training ensures that the Center is staffed with knowledgeable professionals who can design, conduct, and analyse studies effectively, ultimately improving the quality of research output and patient care.
In terms of achievements, the research center has successfully developed a comprehensive suite of essential documents, including standard operating procedures (SOPs), research protocols, consent forms, and compliance checklists.
